Toto number sums: what the total of the winning numbers shows
Add up the six winning numbers and you get a figure between 21 (1+2+3+4+5+6) and 279 (44+45+46+47+48+49). Some players only buy tickets with a "typical" total. Here is how the totals of 688 real draws are spread, compared with an exact count of all 13,983,816 combinations.
Why totals bunch in the middle
There is only one combination that adds up to 21, but there are 165,772 combinations that add up to exactly 150 — the theoretical average. Totals near the middle can be made in vastly more ways, so they turn up far more often. This is the same effect as rolling two dice, where 7 is common and 2 is rare.
688 draws vs the exact distribution
| Total of six numbers | Draws | Actual share | Expected share |
|---|---|---|---|
| 21–99 | 43 | 6.2% | 6.3% |
| 100–124 | 117 | 17.0% | 16.0% |
| 125–149 | 174 | 25.3% | 27.1% |
| 150–174 | 193 | 28.1% | 27.4% |
| 175–199 | 117 | 17.0% | 16.5% |
| 200–279 | 44 | 6.4% | 6.7% |
- 88% of draws had a total between 100 and 200, matching the exact expectation of 87%.
- The spread (standard deviation) was 33.0, against 32.8 in theory.
- A chi-square test across the six bands gives p = 0.91: no detectable difference from the exact distribution.
- Lowest total: 59 on 1 Sep 2025 (draw #4109). Highest: 251 on 23 Dec 2024 (draw #4037).

Should you filter tickets by total?
Filtering to totals between 100 and 200 keeps about 87% of all combinations and throws away the rest. Your chance that the winning combination is among the tickets you buy depends only on how many different tickets you buy — not on their totals. Ten tickets with "typical" totals and ten tickets with extreme totals have exactly the same chance of containing the jackpot.
Where totals can be useful is as a quick sanity check on hand-picked tickets: if every ticket you write totals under 100, you are probably clustering low numbers (often birthdays), which other players also favour. See odd/even and low/high patterns for the same idea from another angle.
