How Toto wheeling works: a practical guide
A wheel is a set of Toto tickets built from a bigger pool of your favourite numbers, arranged so that if enough of your numbers are drawn, at least one ticket is guaranteed to win a specific prize. It is the idea behind TotoLab's wheel generator — here is how it works, what it costs and what it cannot do.
The problem wheeling solves
Say you like ten numbers. To play every six-number combination of those ten, you would buy a System 10 entry: 210 combinations at $210. Most people do not want to spend that, but picking a handful of random six-number tickets from your ten leaves big gaps — four of your numbers could be drawn and still land on different tickets, winning nothing.
A wheel fills those gaps systematically. Instead of all 210 combinations, it picks a much smaller set that still guarantees a result if a given number of your numbers come up.
What a guarantee like “4-if-4” means
Wheel guarantees are written as X-if-Y: if Y of the six winning numbers are among your pool, at least one of your tickets will contain X of them. TotoLab uses matching guarantees (3-if-3, 4-if-4, 5-if-5):
- 3-if-3: if any 3 winning numbers are in your pool, at least one ticket matches 3 — a Group 7 prize ($10) or better.
- 4-if-4: if any 4 winning numbers are in your pool, at least one ticket matches 4 — Group 5 ($50) or better.
- 5-if-5: if any 5 are in your pool, at least one ticket matches 5 — Group 3 or better.
- 6-if-6: the only way to guarantee the jackpot when all six are in your pool is to play every combination — a full System entry.
The condition is the important part. The guarantee only applies if enough of your numbers are drawn. It says nothing about how likely that is.
Worked example: 10 numbers, 4-if-4
Pool:
TotoLab's generator covers this pool with a 4-if-4 guarantee in 23 tickets ($23), instead of 210 for the full System 10. The generator then checks the result: all 210 possible groups of four numbers from the pool appear together on at least one ticket. So whichever four of these ten numbers are drawn, one ticket holds all four.

How many tickets a wheel needs
These are the wheel sizes TotoLab's generator produces, compared with the full System entry. Every wheel was verified against all possible number groups. For 12-number pools, results vary slightly between runs because the generator samples combinations.
| Pool | Full system (cost) | 3-if-3 tickets | 4-if-4 tickets | 5-if-5 tickets |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8 numbers | 28 ($28) | 4 | 8 | 12 |
| 9 numbers | 84 ($84) | 9 | 12 | 34 |
| 10 numbers | 210 ($210) | 10 | 23 | 56 |
| 11 numbers | 462 ($462) | 15 | 37 | 110 |
| 12 numbers | 924 ($924) | 15–18 | 56–57 | 189–193 |
Two patterns stand out. Lower guarantees are dramatically cheaper — a 12-number 3-if-3 wheel is around 15 tickets against 924 for System 12. And costs climb quickly as the guarantee rises: 5-if-5 wheels need a large share of the full system.
What wheeling cannot do
Wheeling does not improve your odds per dollar.
Every Toto combination has the same 1 in 13,983,816 chance of being the jackpot. Twenty-three tickets from a wheel have exactly the same chance as any other twenty-three different tickets. A wheel changes how your wins are distributed — guaranteeing a minimum prize in a scenario you chose — not how likely you are to win.
In practice, a wheel's strength is efficiency when your pool hits. If four of your ten numbers are drawn, a random set of 23 tickets might return nothing, while the wheel guarantees at least one Group 5 prize and often several smaller ones. If your pool does not hit, no arrangement helps.
Abbreviated vs full wheels
- Full wheel — every combination of your pool. Identical to a System entry; guarantees the jackpot if all six winning numbers are in your pool.
- Abbreviated wheel — the smallest set TotoLab can find that meets your chosen guarantee. This is where wheeling saves money.
Using the TotoLab wheel generator
- Pick 7 to 15 numbers on the wheel generator. Hot and cold colouring shows recent frequency, but see why frequency does not predict draws.
- Choose a guarantee — 4-if-4 is a sensible balance of cost and coverage.
- Set a budget cap. Generate, and the tool verifies the guarantee before showing your tickets.
- Use the Verify wheel tab to check any set of tickets against a guarantee, including ones you built yourself.
